Centering Tools
A digital centring gauge that measures a card's borders to help estimate its likely grade. For collectors who pre-grade cards before submitting.
Centring is one of the first things a grader checks. PSA's published standard for a Gem Mint 10 is centring of roughly 55/45 or better on the front and 75/25 on the back, which means the wider border can only be a little larger than the narrower one. That difference is hard to judge by eye, especially on cards with thin or full-art borders. A gauge gives you numbers rather than a guess, so you can decide which cards are worth the grading fee and which belong in a binder.
Choose the digital gauge over the transparent centring tool if you assess a lot of cards, sell on the strength of your pre-grades, or want readings you can compare between cards. The overlay tool is simpler and suits someone checking a handful of pulls before a first submission. Wear cotton or nitrile gloves while measuring raw cards, and once a card passes, sleeve it and move it into a Card Saver I for its trip to the grader.
