A playmat is the one accessory that touches every card in a game. The Palms Off Gaming Core Playmat gives sleeved cards a surface they can be picked up from without scraping across a bare table, and the rubber backing grips so the mat does not slide mid-game. It comes in eight plain colours, from Black and Jade to Pink and Yellow, so there is one for every deck box.

About the Core Playmat

Plain colour mats have a practical side beyond looks. With no printed art, cards stand out clearly against the surface, which makes the board state easier to read across the table in Pokémon, Magic, One Piece or Lorcana. It also means nothing distracts from the cards when the mat is used as a photography background.

That background use is worth thinking about if you sell cards. A flat, single-colour surface removes clutter and gives consistent listing photos. Darker colours such as Black or Purple make holo and foil cards pop, while lighter ones like Yellow or Turquoise suit darker card borders. Some sellers keep two colours for that reason, and swap between them depending on the card being shot.

To keep a mat in good shape, roll it with the playing surface facing outward rather than folding it, which avoids creases. Wipe up spills promptly and let it dry flat before rolling it again. Store it rolled in a tube or flat under something light, away from direct sun, so the colour stays even. A mat that is cared for this way lasts for years of weekly play.

Common questions

Can I wash a playmat?

Spot-clean with a damp cloth and let it air dry flat. Machine washing and heat will separate the cloth from the rubber backing.

Does it work for card photography?

A plain matte mat is a good neutral background and stops cards sliding while you shoot. Darker colours show dust more readily under direct light.
